What is Mental Health?


Mental health includes our emotional, psychological and social well-being. It affect the way we think, feel and act. A person diagnosed with mental illness can experience periods of physical, mental and social well-being.

How common are Mental Illness?


In some study, more than 50% will be diagnosed with a mental illness or disorder at some point of their lifetime. 1 out of 5 children experience serious debilitating mental illness. In America, 1 out of 5 Americans experience mental health every year.

What causes Mental illness?


Some factors that can contribute to risk mental illness includes early adverse life experiences, such as trauma or a history of abuse (for example, child abuse, sexual assault, witnessing violence). (2) Experiences ongoing chronic medical conditions such as cancer or diabetes. (3) Chemical imbalances in brain. (4) use of alcohol or drugs. (5) loneliness

Mental Health in the Philippines


The cultural beliefs of Filipinos vary in almost respect. One of the popular beliefs is that depression and anxiety are non-existent.

A qualitative study of tanaka et al. (2018) showed that stigma is considered to be an effect of public belief about mental disorders which consist of three themes

First is familial problems, wherein the family reject or disowns the family member who suffers from a mental disorder because they believe that it can be inherited.

Second is unrealistic pessimism and optimism about the severity of the disorder, wherein the mentally ill either would certainly suffer from severe functional impairment. Last is the oversimplified chronic course, wherein people without mental illnesses apply an acute illness model to those ill.

In the Philippines , mental illness has become the third most common disability. Over six million Filipinos live with depression and anxiety. In 2020, there are ≥ 3.6 million Filipinos suffer from at least one kind of mental disorder.

Suicide rates are reported to be at 3.2 per 100,000 population with higher rates among males (4.3/100,000) then female (2.0/100,000).
